Train of Thought July 21th, 2003 This is an exercise in which I take a random item from the room or a newspaper article or anything really to begin a thought process and type whatever comes to mind. I was listening on to the radio in the car today and the song American
Girl came on by Tom Petty. I was sitting there confused I said wait
a minute. I don't know if I am the last one to realize this but the
guitar part in the beginning of this song and the guitar part in the
beginning of The Strokes Last Night are EXACTLY the same. Did they pay
Tom Petty the rights to use this? It is pretty shady if you ask me.
I find it kind of amazing though that two great songs can be made from
one guitar riff. Of course there are bands that make entire CD's out
of one guitar riff ala blink 182. Don't get mad at me for that comment
I didn't say it they did. They have fallen in love with the band Bad
Astronaut and vow to now make themselves sound more like them. They
said something along the lines of "we are sick of making an entire
CD based on one guitar riff". The only real issue that I have had
with Blink 182 is that it annoys me greatly that the lead singer has
a voice altering mechanism in his microphone during concerts so if he
sings out of tune it corrects it. This is cheating as far as I'm concerned.
They aren't the only band or artist that does this obviously but I just
hate when people mis-portrayed their talent. Of course some artists
have no talent whatsoever like Britney Spears. A couple of months ago
she said something that unleashed a supreme amount of rage from me.
She said "Anyone can write a boring artistic song. Pop music is
the hardest shit to write." Oh my word I just got angry again while
typing that. How can someone who can't sing or write any lyrics or even
play an instrument claim that anyone can write an artistic song but
oh it takes a genius to write a pop song. Yeah it really takes a genius
to look up words in a rhyming dictionary and find the corniest rhyme
possible. How about you write a whole CD of artistic songs that is critically
acclaimed and well liked then tell me how easy it is. I know one thing
about Ms. Spears that is quite easy
but I'm not going to get into
that. Do you remember when every kind of gum was spearmint? Now winterfresh
type mint has taken over the market and spearmint has been left in the
dust. I actually don't mind dusting it is much better than vacuuming
I hate doing that. At least when I am dusting I can still listen to
music. With the vacuum rumbling and roaring it is kind of difficult
to hear much else. You'd think by now they could make a quieter vacuum.
Why is it that they can make pants that don't stain but we still are
doomed if we spill red wine on our rugs? Some rugs just aren't as comfortable
as they look. You see them and you are like yes! this looks like a cushiony
rug then you sit down and you mine as well be sitting on concrete. Chairs
and couches can be the same way. I refer to these types of furniture
as deceivers. It can go the opposite way as well you could look at a
chair and are imagine the pain before you plop down then when you finally
do sit it is complete bliss.
